Why Your Garbage Disposal Hums But Won’t Spin

You flip the switch and hear a humming sound, but the garbage disposal doesn’t turn. This is a common plumbing issue in Lexington and Columbia homes and usually means the motor is getting power, but the internal grinding plate is jammed.

Common Causes of a Jammed Garbage Disposal

  • Food debris or bones stuck inside
  • Silverware or foreign objects
  • Worn internal components
  • Overheated motor

What You Can Try Safely

If the unit only hums, turn it off immediately to avoid burning out the motor.

Many disposals can be manually turned from the bottom using an Allen wrench.

When It’s Time to Call a Plumber

If resetting the disposal doesn’t solve the issue, the unit may need repair or replacement. Problems with the disposal can also affect your kitchen drain.
